Jivamukti Yoga is a newly founded style that draws its origins from the ancient tradition of Hata Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga. Its creators, David Life and Sharon Gannon, codified its principles in 1984 and started their first school in the city of New York.
Philosophy of Jivamukti Yoga
The term Jimamukti derives from the Sanskrit word जीवन्मुक्ति (jivanmuktih), where jiva indicates the living soul of the individual and mukti means liberation from the cycle of reincarnations. In essence, the ultimate goal of Jivamukti Yoga is to achieve ultimate liberation in the course of one's life. This style is configured not only as a physical discipline, but above all as a journey of spiritual awakening centered on five fundamental elements:
- study of the sacred scriptures;
- awareness / devotion;
- non-violence;
- music;
- meditation.
Therefore, it is not uncommon for Jivamukti Yoga to attract practitioners who are sensitive to the issues of respect for animals, environmentalism and social rights among their ranks. Much appreciated by celebrities, he counts singers and actors such as Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Uma Thurman and Gwyneth Paltrow among his admirers.
Practice and benefits
Jivamukti Yoga, therefore, is characterized by a spiritual aspect and one more closely related to physical practice. The lessons of this style are energetic, characterized by dynamic passages and challenging asanas (although always calibrated according to the student's degree of experience), designed to turn the body and forge the mind. The main benefits of Jivamukti Yoga are:
- increase in strength;
- improved balance;
- increased degree of flexibility;
- detox effect on the whole organism;
- stimulation of blood and lymphatic circulation;
- relieving stress;
- release from tensions.
Those who approach this style can, in a nutshell, aim to improve their overall health, muscle toning, posture, as well as to rediscover a new introspective awareness. Jivamukti Yoga aims to equip practitioners with all the psychophysical tools useful for living in harmony with themselves and with all other forms of living beings.
